A Bath man accused of shooting a female relative in Shirley was arrested at gunpoint later on Monday (July 8) morning in Kennebec County after leading a state trooper on a brief chase. Christopher Hallowell, 24, was charged with attempted murder in connection with the early morning shooting at North Point Farm & Garden on Route 15 in Shirley that wounded a woman, according to Chief Deputy Todd Lyford of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.

Wardens responded to an ATV crash Thursday on the Frenchtown Road in Shawtown Township. The crash involved two subjects on a single dirt bike sometime during the early morning hours.

A Shirley Mills man charged with attempting to share child pornography made his first appearance Monday, July 1 in U.S. District Court in Bangor. Eugene Murray, 25, was not asked to enter a plea because he has not yet been indicted by a federal grand jury.

This summer's series has been scheduled on Thursday and Friday evenings beginning July 4 and 5.

Bangor Savings Bank had a big year in 2018, bringing in record-breaking earnings, acquiring a New Hampshire bank and completing the construction of a new campus on the Bangor waterfront, where about 400 people now work. After a long and exhaustive search, Greenville has hired a new town manager. His name is Michael Roy, and he hails from Winslow. He and his wife Wendy purchased a camp overlooking Moosehead Lake seven years ago and shortly thereafter decided that Greenville would be their forever home after retirement. Roy is retiring from a long held management position at FedEx and will take over as town manager on July 1. His contract is for three years with an annual salary of  $68,000.

Next month a new county manager will start work as the Piscataquis County Commissioners appointed Michael L. Williams of Greenbush to the position during a June 18 meeting. Williams will start work on Monday, July 8, succeeding the retiring Tom Lizotte.

Every time I drive by the depot in Greenville Junction where it perches jauntily alongside the tracks, I think of the icon that old building is, with its unique “witches hat” roof covering the ladies waiting room.

Maine game wardens received a report of a hiker suffering a medical emergency on the Appalachian Trail shortly after noon on Friday, June 7. Penobscot Sheriff’s Office received the 911 call from Devin Kaufman, 25 of Fairfield, who reported he was hiking southbound near Big Beaver Pond before dispatchers lost contact with him.

The state legislation that’s required for Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft to merge with Northern Light Health could be approved by next week, but it won’t include conditions proposed by a Piscataquis County lawmaker that would have given the towns that now own the hospital more control over the deal.

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, chairman of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that nine airports across Maine have been awarded a total of $3,490,995 from the Department of Transportation (DOT).

As state lawmakers continue to evaluate a bill that would allow Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft to merge with the statewide Northern Light Health system, they must also consider a recent proposal that would give more control of the process to the communities that now oversee the hospital.

Some of the wonderful things to enjoy in the Moosehead region, now that the snow has finally retreated, are the many hiking trails in the area. A nearly decade-old plan to improve and expand the trail system in the region continues to be implemented and volunteers are already working to maintain the trails.
