Stephanie Smith, who has coached the Foxcroft Academy field hockey team to 51 victories in four seasons including the 2013 Class C state championship, is directing the Ponies’ softball program this spring for the first time.

Foxcroft Academy sophomore right-hander Makenzie Beaudry admitted that rain can cause problems for her. But Beaudry overcame a brief rain delay to toss a no-hitter and senior second baseman Abbi Bourget scored the winning run on an error in the seventh inning as the Ponies edged Ellsworth 3-2 on May 10 in a Class B North softball game.

Piscataquis Community High School held off a seventh inning rally bid by visiting Penquis Valley High School during a Class C North softball game on May 5 between the two regional rivals.

No one could blame Billy Brock for a slow start on the mound , given brisk late-afternoon conditions that reminded the high school baseball fans gathered at Foxcroft Academy about the concept of wind chill. Brock eventually found that feeling in his pitching hand midway through Foxcroft’s Class B North encounter against previously undefeated John Bapst, retiring 10 of 11 batters he faced at one point to help coach Nick Miller’s club secure a 5-2 victory.

The 11th annual Three Rivers Kiwanis Sebec River Canoe and Kayak Race is being held on Saturday, May 20. Paddlers compete in nine racing and recreational classes for canoes and kayaks.

Seven runs, six of which came with two outs, in the home half of the third inning helped Dexter Regional High School break open an April 28 Class C North baseball contest vs. regional rival Penquis Valley High School. The Tigers would finish with a baker’s dozen run total on the scoreboard to win 13-4.

Lawrence G. Holmquist of Monson has bequeathed $20,000 to Piscataquis Community High School to establish two $1,000 student/athlete scholarships to be awarded annually.

The Husson University women's basketball recently added some depth to the front and back courts, receiving a commitment from Emma Alley and Abby Simpson. Simpson is a forward from Foxcroft Academy, while Alley is a guard from Stearns High School in Millinocket.

A total of 87 racers across 50 boats braved the chilly conditions to make the approximate 10-mile paddle from King Cummings Park in Guilford to the finish line across West Main Street from Foxcroft Academy in the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club’s 45th annual Piscataquis River Race on April 22.

The outdoor track and field teams from both Dexter and Greenville kicked off the season on April 20 with a meet at Brewer.

The 45th annual Piscataquis River Race, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft, is scheduled for Saturday, April 22. Canoeists and kayakers will start from King Cummings Park in Guilford and paddle about 10 miles down river to Foxcroft Academy.

Derek “Shatterproof” Shorey had planned to take some time off from the mixed martial arts wars after a loss to Josh Parker last November. But family matters have prompted the head of the Dexter-based Shatterproof Combat Club to return to the cage on April 29 as part of a New England Fights card at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston. The sudden urgency for his return to action came in the aftermath of a recent two-alarm fire in Somersworth, N.H., that put four of his children and their mother out of their home.
