Over 80 runners brave the heat at FA cross country meet

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Runners from over a half dozen schools took off from the starting line with a temperature reading in the 80s during the annual Penobscot Valley Conference cross country meet at Foxcroft Academy on the afternoon of Sept. 14.

The host Pony boys would finish in fourth place among teams with full contingents as the Ponies scored 95 points. Hermon High School came in first at 26 points, with John Bapst Memorial High School of Bangor second at 65 and Calais High School in third place at 76 points. Placing fifth was Machias Memorial High School with a score of 134 points. Dexter Regional High School had four boys run on Friday in Dover-Foxcroft.

In the girls’ meet John Bapst came in first at 24 points with Hermon coming in second at 53 points. Host Foxcroft was third at 80 points, followed by 90 for Calais and Machias’ 110 points.

SPRINTING DOWN THE FINAL STRETCH — Foxcroft sophomore Barrett Knapp and Calais sophomore Mason Ritchie race down the last 100 meters of the meet on the track. Knapp edged Ritchie by about a half second at 20:54.44 to 20:54.98 as Knapp became the first Pony to finish.
