Over 50 people gathered at Stutzman’s Farm Café in Sangerville on the evening of October 3 to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Participants enjoyed soup, salad and wood-fired pizza while listening to the music of Craig Stutzman.

SAD 4 officials have found a solution for design and access issues with the district website at www.sad4.org and providing information to students, parents and the community. During an October 8 school board meeting at Piscataquis Community High School the directors authorized Superintendent Kelly MacFadyen to use up to $15,000 from the minor capital improvement fund to contract with Apptegy on revamping and then maintaining the website.

Valley Grange of Guilford notes that the fall event calendar includes plenty of opportunities for celebrating and strengthening American values and hometown roots.

Recently a request was submitted to the Maine Land Use Planning Commission (LUPC) by Weyerhaeuser, a forestland owner in the Moosehead area, to dissolve the terms of the Moosehead Lake Region Concept Plan. The concept plan, which was approved by LUPC’s predecessor agency in 2009, re-zoned approximately 17,000 acres around Moosehead Lake for commercial, industrial, residential and resort development. To date, no development has occurred.

Come September, many Mainers expect to see a steady parade of pickup trucks heading into the northern forest as hunters take part in the state’s moose hunt. That’s not always been the case, however.

Members of the community are invited to attend the annual meeting of the board of directors of the Piscataquis Regional YMCA at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The meeting will be held at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA, 48 Park Street in Dover-Foxcroft.

Most everyone in Greenville, when asked if they know Joe Bolf, will say something like, “Oh sure, he’s the woodcarver around here.” And they’re right. Bolf owns a woodcarver’s shop and has been a resident of the town for many years.

When the Countryside Meat Market closed its doors last spring, the Dover-Foxcroft community lost a long-time source for meat and friendly local service. The owners had retired and the store was up for sale. But now Heartstone Farm is planning to reopen the market on Saturdays starting Oct. 19. The farm raises 100 percent grass fed beef on 500 acres in Charleston. The farm and has been renting the meat market for storage and distribution since June.

Mindy Sanborn recently became the new director at Guilford Memorial Library. Sanborn has a strong background in technology and business management. She hopes to maintain much of the home-like feeling of the library while giving patrons access to modern technologies.

Warm weather and some unpredictable moose behavior are being cited by guides for a lower-than-normal harvest rate for the recently completed September week of moose season, but the state’s moose biologist says there’s no cause for alarm.

Let’s Go! in partnership with Mayo Regional Hospital is honoring 14 sites in greater Piscataquis County for their positive impact on children’s health. These schools, school cafeterias, out-of-school programs and child care programs, in addition to several of health care practices, have adopted healthy eating and active living practices, influencing the choices children make.

Doors to the Piscataquis County Ice Arena on West Main Street were formally opened with a ribbon cutting on Monday, Sept. 30. The $5.5 million project, funded by the Libra Foundation and being managed day-to-day by Foxcroft Academy, had some distinguished guests including Gov. Janet Mills and Hockey Hall of Fame member Ray Bourque who played for the Boston Bruins for more than two decades.

In 1820 Maine became the 23rd state, separating from Massachusetts, and the Grand Lodge of Masons in Maine was established. The first Governor of the State of Maine, William King, was also the first Grand Master of Masons in Maine. In recognition and celebration of these historic events Chris Russell, District Deputy Grand Master of Maine’s 5th Masonic District, has organized a celebration for Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds.
