The 50th anniversary of the Knights of Columbus and the Tri-County Shriners (held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Dexter) was led by Tri-County Shriner’s President Rich Johnson, middle, on May 16 with a social hour and meal.

General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC)/Miosac Club Sebec Lake Ice Out Contest judges Tom and Doris Coy announced the ice went out at 10:38 a.m. on Friday, May 4.

A blood drive will be held from 1-6 p.m. on Thursday, May 31 at the Knights of Columbus, 179 North Dexter Road in Dexter. Another will be from noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Dover Foxcroft, 660 Bangor Road in Dover-Foxcroft.

On May 11 91 University of Maine at Fort Kent nursing students graduated from the program, with 32 of them attending the 34th annual UMFK Nurse Pinning Ceremony on campus. Among the 32 was Tricia N. Sherman of Greenville Junction.

Molly Bennett, an eighth-grader at the Ridge View Community School in Dexter, spearheaded a “Veteran's Box” to collect donations for servicemen and women receiving care from the VA.

The Mayo Regional Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department is celebrating EMS Week from May 20-26 by expanding its community paramedicine program. Community paramedicine is a program where a physician can have a paramedic visit with a patient in a non-emergent situation to provide a variety of services including wound checks, lab work, and assisting patients with their medications and a variety of other similar services.

The Brownville-Brownville Junction Historical Society held its annual meeting on May 15 at the Parish House Museum.

Members of Sebec Village Associates, or the Sebec Reading Room as they are informally called, met on Friday, May 11 to discuss the upcoming year. Members present lamented a bit on the list of repairs that are needed to maintain the quaint community building where they hold activities all year for the lakeside village and surrounding townspeople. Even though many repairs have been done in the past years, the list of building repairs is still long.

Visitors young and old were able to learn about the life of Anne Frank and think about how lessons from Europe during World War II can be applied today as the “Anne Frank: A History for Today” traveling exhibit was on display at The Commons at Central Hall from May 2-11.

Fifth- and sixth-grade students from Piscataquis Community Elementary School are planning to reveal their designs for SAD 4’s outdoor classroom during the early evening of Thursday, May 24. The students been working on a layout using “Design Thinking” and have designed blueprints, sketches and “gallery walks.”

Ken and Jane Brooks along with Joe and Nel Kennedy (Brooks and Kennedy) play their classic country at the Wayside Theatre at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.

For 116 years, the historic Sangerville Town Hall has been the focal point of town government and the community. Up until the last 10 years, the second story has seen little use since access is by two multi-step staircases. A group of residents, spearheaded by the Sangerville Historical Society, is investigating whether the town could secure grant funds to install an elevator to the second floor, to make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

DEXTER — One year ago, a group of Dexter citizens and people from bordering towns came together to form the Age-Friendly Dexter Committee to consider how to build a community that meets the needs of all ages from childhood to old age.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC)/Miosac Club met at Thayer Parkway May 1 for the annual meeting. President Anne Cress welcomed members and offered grace before each member ate their brown bag lunch.
