Neighbors help neighbors during Schoodic Lake rescue

On the evening of July 23, Brownville Fire Rescue was dispatched to a water rescue on Schoodic Lake in the area off Knights Landing, per a post on the Brownville Fire Rescue Facebook page.

Responding units were updated that there were individuals in the water about a half mile off shore. They were also advised that there were several good samaritans on boats that were en route to assist.

Upon arrival at the boat ramp Brownville Fire Rescue personnel were pleased to learn that three individuals had been rescued and brought to shore by the assisting good samaritans.

Two individuals were evaluated by EMS personnel on scene for exposure after being in the water for a period of time. After warming up, both decided not to seek additional medical treatment at the hospital.

It was determined that a small boat had experienced a mechanical issue while on the lake and after a period of time several of the occupants attempted to swim to shore for assistance. Responders were pleased to learn they had life jackets on.

Thanks to the actions of local good samaritans this event had a very positive outcome and everyone went home safe. Not only did they assist the swimmers in the water, they also towed the disabled boat to shore. Although we are confident that any one of our readers would have assisted, it was ironic that the good samaritans were retired and active duty firefighters from other communities who have homes on Schoodic Lake.
