Three area players take part in McDonald’s festivities
BANGOR — A trio of players from the region competed in the 2013 Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star basketball games on Saturday, March 9 at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University.
Bell
Dexter Regional High School’s Jordyn Bell and Lauren Crane and Lexi Larson of Penquis Valley High School all suited up for the girls C/D East team, which played a squad representing C/D West. In the game Bell scored eight points, Larson six and Crane tallied five as the East won 74-70.
Larson
Penquis Valley boys head coach Tony Hamlin — who is retiring from the position after winning the Class C state championship and reaching the 400-win milestone this past season — was one of two coaches for the boys C/D East team. This team defeated the C/D West all-stars 113-100.
Crane
The evening before the all-star games, an awards ceremony was held at Husson by the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC). In addition to the senior all-stars and free throw region champions, the 2013 All-State Academic Team members were also recognized.
Merchant
Among the honors presented during the banquet, was the Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game award which was presented to Kyle Merchant of Dexter. The honor, which goes to one senior male and one senior female student, annually recognizes seniors who embody the spirit of basketball, exemplify sportsmanship and support and inspire their teammates and coaching staff.
Proceeds from the weekend’s festivities go toward Ronald McDonald House Charities, which helps Maine children through a variety of programs.
