MILO’S MOST SENIOR CITIZEN — Milo resident Elmer K. Cunningham received the Boston Post Cane, signifying him as the community’s eldest resident, from Town Manager David Maynard during Cunningham’s 97th birthday party on March 3 at Pat’s Pizza in Dover-Foxcroft.
Maynard explained to Elmer and his 40 guests, the history and the purpose of the Boston Post Cane Award. The cane is presented to the oldest citizen of Milo, explained Maynard. The award was established in 1909 by the Publishers of The Boston Post newspaper, as a way of recognizing the oldest citizen in 700 small towns in New England.
Elmer was born in Brownville in 1916 and lived most of his life in Milo, having retired from the B & A Railroad at the Derby Car Shops.
There were three generations of Elmer’s family present at the party, some coming as far away as California and New Mexico to celebrate his 97th birthday.
Elmer was surprised and very pleased to receive the Boston Cane and would like to thank all those who attended his party and those who sent cards and made phone calls wishing him a happy birthday.
