Why the dam controversy?
To the Editor;
I don’t understand why the Mayo Mill Dam project in Dover-Foxcroft has become so controversial. The town has few options regarding restoration of the aging structure to come into compliance with state and federal requirements. This would require millions of dollars with little return for the town. These dollars would inevitably come from increased property taxes.
Historically, this is not the original structure. Being in poor condition, it will continue to deteriorate with no controls on damage caused by debris and sediment release. There is funding available to remove the structure as well as shoreline repair and restoration with native plants. For decades our town has been changing and will continue to do so. Perhaps we can come together to create a vibrant community of trust and respect to pass on to our children and grandchildren.
