Kiwanis and CA Dean fight food insecurity, exceed food drive goal

GREENVILLE — Food insecurity affects children’s health and development, and it’s a problem close to home: one in four kids in Piscataquis County doesn’t have enough to eat. Northern Light CA Dean Hospital, the Moosehead Lake Kiwanis Club, and the Greenville community recently teamed up to address the issue by holding a successful food drive in support of the Kiwanis Club’s Backpack Program.
GREENVILLE — Food insecurity affects children’s health and development, and it’s a problem close to home: one in four kids in Piscataquis County doesn’t have enough to eat. Northern Light CA Dean Hospital, the Moosehead Lake Kiwanis Club, and the Greenville community recently teamed up to address the issue by holding a successful food drive in support of the Kiwanis Club’s Backpack Program.
Hundreds of boxes of muffin mix, granola and fruit bars, macaroni and cheese, cereal, and more were donated to the food drive, easily exceeding the goal of 150 items. Kiwanis will distribute the food collected to children and families in need.

“The Moosehead Lake Kiwanis Club thanks the employees of CA Dean and those in our community who donated to the food drive,” says Prudy Richards, a Kiwanian and organizer of the Backpack Program. “We’re grateful for all the support prior to the holiday season when families may find it especially difficult to access nutritious food.”
Food donations were collected at the hospital and at Indian Hill Trading Post at Moosehead Lake.
