Club honors late member with a tea of remembrance

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC)/Miosac Club held the first meeting of 2017 on Jan. 17 with nine members and one guest.
President Anne Cress called the session to order. Carol Kilpatrick led the Club Collect, America ‘s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for former member Athalie Burke. Secretary Diane Leighton took roll and read minutes of the last three meetings. In the absence of Treasurer Pat Jones, Kilpatrick gave the treasurer’s report. Roxy McGlauflin read one piece of correspondence.
Under unfinished business, the new community directory was discussed and the committee was thanked for an excellence job. McCormick noted the she continues to send news to the Piscataquis Observer. Suzanne Raymond distributed copies of the new proposed bylaws. Members were asked to read and make comments at the next meeting when they will be voted on.
McCormick reported on her information regarding the veterans home in Bangor. Members were asked to bring personal care items, word searches, books cards with large numbers and socks — anything that meets the need. McCormick showed six laps robes she crocheted for veterans, as well as two Project Linus quilt blankets.
She also asked members to take some of the Valentine’s cards she made and write messages on them — a motion for this was passed. Members were also asked to each make 10 Valentine’s cards so that all 150 veterans home residents will receive one. These will be hand delivered by GFWC/Miosac Club members.
Cress asked that volunteer hours sheets be passed and that members start recording their time. She also presented each member with a copy of the volunteer hours for last year.
The Sebec Lake Ice Out was discussed and the club will continue this for another year. Tickets will be available in late February.
Cress noted District President Marge Goodwin would like to have the District High School Art Contest on April 8, location to be announced. The local art contest will be March 26. Wendy Hutchins is the chair and helpers are Rheba Michaud and Raymond. Members offered to bring food and punch, and Suzette East will again be the judge
The meeting was adjourned and a special tea was held to honor Burke. Before her passing, Burke asked her daughter to present the members with one of Burke’s special tea cups which was done at the Christmas party.
Club members were asked to bring the cups and share something special about Burke. Many stories followed, each being a bit different but all similar as Burke was well liked and was a stellar federation member for many years. She will be remembered and missed. Brenda Quiet was program chair and McLaughlin and Kilpatrick provided lovely tea desserts.
The next meeting will be Feb. 7 with Jones as program chair. The session will be a show and tell program with members bringing something special to them to talk about. Hostesses will be Quiet and Elaine Larson.
