Foxcroft boys finish seventh, PCHS girls place eighth at Class C track championship

Pirates’ Goulette wins discus, shot

STANDISH — Athletes from four of the area’s high schools took part in the 2024 Class C outdoor track and field championships on Saturday, June 1 at St. Joseph’s College. The Foxcroft Academy boys had the highest finish from the region as the Ponies scored 39 points to place seventh among a field of 36 schools scoring points at the meet.

Foxcroft senior Hunter McSorley led his team by picking up two top three finishes in the throwing events. McSorley had the day’s second-best performance in the javelin with his throw measuring 149 feet, 11 inches. He also came in third in the shot put at a distance of 46-09.25.

Sophomore Conner Donahue had a pair of individual fifth-place finishes. The first of these came in the final of the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.54 seconds. Donahue was fifth in the long jump at a distance of 20-10.50.

Donahue also anchored the fifth-place 4×100 relay team. Foxcroft sophomores Aiden Bryant and Landon Smith, freshman Eamon Vandermast, and Donahue together ran the race in 46.41 seconds.

TWO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS — PCHS sophomore Ava Goulette, pictured during the previous week’s conference championship, won both the shot put and the discus at the 2024 Class C outdoor track and field championship on June 1 at St. Joseph’s College in Standish. Goulette won with respective throws measuring 37-08 and 111-05 to help the Pirates conclude the day in eight place, tied for the program’s highest finish in the last two decades-plus.

Senior Jack Kingsbury came in fifth in the finals of the 110 hurdles in 16.57 seconds. He also had a seventh-place performance in the high jump at 5-10.

Senior Jackson Smith finished a spot ahead of Kingsbury in the high jump as Smith cleared the bar at 6-00.

Pony senior Zachary Peirce placed sixth in the 1,600 racewalk with his time of 8:39.85.

Other Foxcroft state championship meet participants included Kingsbury and Bryant who were 10th and 12 in the 300 hurdles with respective times of 45.70 and 46.92 seconds. Bryant was also 14th in the 110 hurdle prelims at 18.27 seconds.

THREE TIMES IN FIFTH — Foxcroft Academy sophomore Conner Donahue, pictured during the PVC small school championship, came in fifth in both the long jump and 100 meters at the Class C championship over the weekend. He also anchored the fifth-place 4×100 relay to help the Pony boys end the day in seventh place.

Freshman Joesph Knapp came in 13th in the 1,600 at 4:57.25 and 16th in the 800 at 2:17.03. Peirce placed 20th at 2:23.37.

Vandermast finished 15th in the 200 at 24.58 seconds, and he was 28th in the 100-meter preliminary standings at 12.05 seconds.

Junior Runner Jarrett’s time of 11:09.90 was good for 16th place in the 3,200, while freshman Pace Jarrett came in 20th at 11:38.50.

Landon Smith was 16th in the triple jump at 38-03 and 18th in the long jump at 18-06.75.

TRIPLE JUMP POINTS — Dexter freshman Brookelin Dorman represented her school at the state meet in Standish, coming in fifth in the triple jump at 33-09.25. She also was 17th in the 100 prelims at 13.68 seconds and 20th in the 200 at 29.37 seconds.

Junior Jaxson Zimmerman had a 19th-place throw in the shot put at 37-07.50.

The boys from Dexter Regional High School finished 16th at the Class C meet with a score of 12 points.

Sophomore Damiair Miller came in third in the triple jump at a distance of 41-05.50.

Sophomore Brady Jerome contributed the other half dozen points by coming in third in the discus. Jerome’s top throw measured 122-09.

FOURTH IN THE SHOT — Foxcroft Academy freshman Jasmine Hall came in fourth at the Class C outdoor track championship with her throw of 33-11.50. Hall accounted for half of her team’s 10 points as the Ponies tied Winthrop High School for 19th place in the standings.

Freshman Tristan Hopkins-Watrous finished ninth in the 110 hurdle prelims at 17.63 seconds, just missing a berth in the event finals. He was also 24th in the 100 meter prelims at 11.98 seconds.

Sophomore Bryce Cooper and Miller were 11th and 18th respectively in the high jump at 5-05 and 5-02. Miller also came in 16h in the long jump at 18-10.50.

Penquis Valley High School picked up six points to be part of a 3-way tie for 23rd place along with Mountain Valley High School of Rumford and the cooperative of Houlton High School/Greater Houlton Christian Academy, and Hodgdon High School.

Patriot sophomore Jareth Williams scored the six points by coming in third in the 100. In the 100-meter finals Wiliams ran a time of 11.49 seconds.

Williams also anchored the 12th place 4×100 relay with juniors Lucas Chai and James Chenkin, sophomore Ethan Lewis, and Williams combining for a time of 48.19 seconds.

Chai came in 25th in the triple jump at 36-05.

Winslow High School won the boys team championship with 89 points, just ahead of the 85 for Orono High School, and 82 points for Lisbon High School/Oak Hill High School of Wales. The title is the second in three years for the Black Raiders and sixth overall in program history.

In the girls’ meet, Piscataquis Community High School scored 25 points to place eighth among a field of 33 schools scoring at least one point. The eighth place finish matches last year’s for the Pirates as the highest in the team standings for the PCHS girls dating back to 2003 (the earliest year for still online meet statistics).

Sophomore Ava Goulette earned top honors in both the shot put and the discus. 

Goulette’s throw of 37-08 gave her the Class C shot put championship, 25 inches ahead of the 35-07 for runner-up Seacoast Christian School of South Berwick senior Ellie Leech.

Goulette became the Class C discus title holder with a throw measuring 111-05. This distance was 3 feet, 7 inches further than the 107-10 for George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill senior Meranda Peet.

By coming in first in both events, Goulette qualified for the New England championship set for Saturday, June 8 at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire. Her shot put throw ended up being the second highest among the Class A, B, and C meets, and her discus throw was the third-best across the three competitions.

Goulette is the first PCHS girl to win an individual state outdoor track championship since at least 2003.

Sophomore Sadie Kelley accounted for the other five PCHS points. Kelly came in fourth in the 1,600 racewalk at a time of 9:26.50.

Pirate sophomore Jazmin Channon had a pair of 10th place performances, in the 100 prelims at 13.50 seconds and triple jump at 31-04.75. Channon also finished 13th in the 200 at 28.68 seconds, and she was 16th in the long jump at 13-10.25.

Three PCHS girls threw in the javelin competition. They were sophomore Molly Goodwin, 13th at 86-03; Goulette, 16th at 84-05; and freshman Olivia Goodwin, 21st at 79-09.

The Foxcroft Academy girls came in 19th place with 10 points, tying the total of Winthrop High School.

Junior Alexis Heretakis finished fourth in the long jump standings at a distance of 16-01.25.

Freshman Jasmine Hall had the other five Pony points with her fourth-place shot put throw at 33-11.50.

Senior Hilary Howard was 10th in the javelin at exactly 87 feet. She also opened the 13th place 4×100 relay with Howard, freshman Marion Deitz, junior Ingrid Berling, and Heretakis running the race in 55.55 seconds.

Heretakis was 12th in the 100-meter prelims at 13.54 seconds, and she was 17th in the 200 at 28.97 seconds.

Deitz finished 12th in the high jump at 4-05. Berling was part of a 7-way tie for 16th place at 4-02. She also finished 16th in the 400 in a time of 1:07.41.

The Dexter girls picked up four points as the Tigers and Narraguagus High School of Cherryfield tied for 27th place.

Tiger freshman Brookelin Dorman came in fifth in the triple jump with her leap of 33-09.25. 

Dorman also ran the 100 and 200. She was 17th in the 100-meter prelims at 13.68 seconds and 20th in the 200 at 29.37 seconds.

The Penquis girls had no score but five Patriots took part in the state championship.

Sophomore Brooklyn Decker had an 18th place throw in the shot put at 27-08.50 and she was 25th in the javelin at 76-02.

Senior Addison Conklin finished 19th in the long jump at 13-08. She also anchored the 20th place 4×100 relay — comprised of senior Layla Chai, freshmen Violet Chai and Ashley Ladd, and Conklin – which was 20th at 57.21 seconds.

Orono won the girls crown with 122 points, followed by 116 for North Yarmouth Academy/Maine Coast Waldorf School of Freeport, and 88 points for third place Bucksport High School. The Red Riots earned top Class C honors for the second season in a row, third time in five years and ninth time in the last half dozen seasons. The championship is the 14th overall for the Red Riots.
