DOVER-FOXCROFT — Hugo H. Cross, 89, husband of the late Elsie “Penny” (Glenn) Cross, passed away March 20, 2014, at a Bangor nursing home. He was born February 12, 1925, in Guilford, the son of Hugo S. and Eveline (Snow) Cross.
Hugo served with the U.S. Air Force from 1943-1945. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1952, and received his Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University. Hugo taught high school in Howland for two years, in Mass. for 2 years, Long Island, NY for 2 years, and retired after 30 years of teaching in Conn. He also thoroughly enjoyed coaching tennis, football and baseball at all the schools where he taught. He was the recipient of several fellowships which enabled him to travel and further his studies during his summer vacations. He was also a tennis pro, playing at country clubs all over the country during his vacations. Hugo was a member of the Chadbourne Merrill American Legion Post No.29 in Dover-Foxcroft and a former member of the U.S. Professional Tennis Assoc., the Maine Assoc. of Retirees, and the University of Maine Alumni Association.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Joyce Cross of Dover-Foxcroft; three nieces, Judy Cross of Dover-Foxcroft, Susan Underwood of Washington State, Carol Bruere of Albuquerque, NM; and a nephew, Jeff Cross, of Dover-Foxcroft. Hugo also leaves his dear friends, Greg and Norma Dyer of Dover-Foxcroft. He was predeceased by a brother, Ruel Cross, and two sisters, Florence Underwood and Frances Cross.
A memorial service will be held 2pm Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with Pastor Bea Violette officiating. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
