Lyford and Bess named Mr. Basketball semifinalists
Two former teammates at Penquis Valley High School have been named as semifinalists for the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches’ Mr. Basketball award, which recognizes the state’s top senior player for their on-court performance and contributions to their team and the sport of Maine high school basketball.

Among the 11 semifinalists are Penquis senior Trevor Lyford and Hampden Academy’s Isaiah Bess, who played three seasons for the Patriots before transferring to the Class A school for his senior season.
The other nine players are Dustin Cole of Bonny Eagle, Mike McDevitt of Greely, Zach Gilpin of Hampden Academy, Jon Phelps of Mt. Desert Island, Isaiah Stone-Patterson of Oceanside, Jayvon Pitts-Young and Justin Zukowski of Portland, Serge Nyirikamba of Waynflete and Jacob Moody of Wells.
In the weeks to come three finalists will be chosen, and the 2014 Mr. Basketball winner will be announced at the Maine McDonald’s All-Star Banquet Friday, March 7 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The next day the semifinalists will be part of the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Games at Husson University.
