Olive “Nellie” Strout Buck
SEBEC – Olive “Nellie” Strout Buck, 83, passed away unexpectedly on April 4, 2013, at Mayo Regional Hospital. She was born December 18, 1929, in Milo, to Aubrey F. and Hattie B. Fitz Strout. She attended Milo High School and received a diploma from American School in Chicago in 1952.
She married Lester Edwin Buck of Atkinson in 1945 and they shared 67 happy years until his death June 2, 2012. They lived in Greenville beside Moosehead Lake for six years while saving up money to buy a small dairy farm in East Dover. After their two daughters left for college in 1970, they moved to Sebec where they developed the highly productive Blueberry Ridge Farm from overgrown fields and woods. Olive worked at Dexter Shoe and then acquired a Certified Nursing Assistant license to work at Hibbard Nursing Home.
She served for many years as leader of the Jolly Worka 4-H Club in East Dover and the Piscataquis County Junior Leaders Club. She was a past president of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Board and an associate supervisor of the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation Board (PCSWCD). She was a selectman in Sebec from 1986-1991, served from 1987-1996 on the Farmer’s Home Association Board, and was currently a Farm Service Agency County Committee member. In 2008, Olive and Lester were named Cooperator of the Year by PCSWCD for their conservation practices. She also loved to cook and was locally renowned for her home-made doughnuts.
Olive is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Nancy B. and W. Louis Sidell, Jr. of Guilford, and Lorraine G. and James W. Catlin of Harpswell; four grandchildren, Janelle Dunn of Durham, Tana Catlin of Cape Coral, FL, Jamie Chanthabouly of Hampton, VA, and Barry Catlin of Harpswell; six great-grandchildren, Kyle, Alex, Katie, Boupha, Khamay and Kalaya; and a brother, Clarence Strout of Derby.
A celebration of Olive’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at the Sebec 4 Corners Event Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sebec Historical Society, 388 North Road, Sebec, ME 04481.
