PCSWCD dedicates Bluebird Trail at the Law Farm

DOVER-FOXCROFT — On Aug. 30 the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) celebrated the retirement of Madeline “Lynn” Lubas and honored her for 12 years of service and dedication. As a thank you for Lubas’ commitment, folks from the Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) and Farm Service Agency (FSA) contributed to the development of the new Bluebird Trail at the Law Farm and together, dedicated the trail to her. The Bluebird Trail at the Law Farm is now open for the public to enjoy.

Lubas is known to have a passion for birding. She spearheaded a series of birding workshops and events now offered annually by the PCSWCD. The birding series includes offerings such as an annual bird walk at the Law Farm, bird call ID workshops, Forestry for Maine Birds and more and are all offered through partnerships from organizations such as the Maine Audubon Society, Forest Stewards Guild and the popular Bob Duchesne, bird guide and author of Maine Birding Trails. Lubas has fostered these valuable partnerships and brought interesting, beneficial educational opportunities to Piscataquis County for all to enjoy.

BLUEBIRD TRAIL — The new Bluebird Trail at the Law Farm in Dover-Foxcroft was dedicated to Lynn Lubas, honoring her for 12 years of service to the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District. The trail is now open to the public.

The Bluebird Trail was a longtime goal for Lubas and the PCSWCD, and has been in place to develop as part of a continuing Law Farm long-range plan. Her retirement was the perfect opportunity to bring her vision to life and the trail work was completed solely through generous donations and effort from partners within the organization who know and appreciate Lubas. The trail dedication was a lovely surprise and the perfect way to wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.

Want to know what to expect while walking the Bluebird trail? From the parking area you will see new signage “Bluebird Trail” and the short and easy walk to the viewing bench located on the trail. While enjoying the bench, which was provided by a Maine Community Foundation grant in partnership with The Commons, you can enjoy the perennial pollinator flowers which were purchased from Trailside Gardens in Abbot.

Lubas is an advocate for native pollinators, being a member of the Beekeepers Association and time spent educating in our communities, and we knew she would appreciate the sentiment. While relaxing on the bench, you will be able to look out into the field where three locally-sourced bluebird boxes are placed to watch the comings and goings of the birds. A trail camera was also purchased and placed at the Law Farm, so that we all can enjoy the wildlife that call the Law Farm their home. Photos from the Bluebird Trail Cam will be shared with the social media community. Follow PCSWCD on Facebook and instagram for “Bluebird Box” updates.

Congratulations to Lubas on her retirement. We appreciate everything she has done for the PCSWCD and the community during her 12 years of service. She will be missed dearly and will always be in our hearts.
