Seven residents from the region took part in the 20th annual TD Beach to Beacon 10K on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 5, being part of 6,879 finishers from Maine and across the world to cover the 6.2 miles.

As a fisheries manager, our inventory is fish and knowing how many fish are in a body of water would be ideal, but we rarely have the ability to measure this. Fish won’t hold still long enough for us to count them!

As he considers his future in the sport following a serious knee injury last summer shortly before starting college, for the second consecutive year Dover-Foxcroft resident and 2016 Foxcroft Academy graduate Tino Ayala helped dozens of younger players in kindergarten through grade 8 improve their skills through his Ayala Soccer Academy July 10-14 on campus of the SeDoMoCha School.

The West roared out to a 26-0 lead, then went on to put up the most points it has ever scored in a Lobster Bowl with a 55-18 victory over the East at Thornton Academy's Hill Stadium on a sunny Saturday, July 15. Net proceeds from the game go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

A record field of 90 runners took part in the annual 5K road race to start the 2017 Fourth of July festivities in Sebec Village. Garth Altenbury had the fastest time of the 90 participants, as he covered the 3.1 miles in a time of 19 minutes, 10 seconds.

A total of 14 craft were entered into 13 different classes during the annual Sebec Lake canoe race held mid-morning as part of the Fourth of July festivities in the village.

For the 16th consecutive summer wrestlers in grades 5-12 from across Maine came to town to learn new techniques and skills they can use during the upcoming scholastic season at the Foxcroft Academy Competition Camp held June 27-30.

For the second time in as many home games during the young Junior American Legion season, the Rowell’s Navigators earned a walk-off victory. The victory during a June 28 contest vs. the Bangor Cadets was earned with the go-ahead run coming on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.

The Piscataquis Regional YMCA kicked off the 2017 Maine Whoopie Pie Festival on June 24 with the its annual Earn Your Whoopie Pie 3K and Kids’ 1K Fun Run, with both races starting on River Street.

When I started work for the IFW in the mid-1980s, we were having a peak in fishing activity. Angler use was at an all-time high and I used to cringe on the Monday of the Memorial Day weekend to see the steady stream of traffic heading south all loaded with fish from my favorite trout ponds (in my mind anyway).

On June 10 at the Foxcroft Golf Club over 70 area golfers teed off to benefit Pine Tree Hospice. This year’s tournament was co-sponsored by Kimball Insurance of Sangerville.
