A 1,000-point scorer at Milo High School and a Milo native who would go on to become a coach, teacher and administrator as well as the long-time director of the Eastern Maine high school tournament are among the class of 22 players, coaches and contributors who will join the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in August.

Developing quality depth has been at the core of a generation of wrestling success at Foxcroft Academy. But the Ponies may have taken that skill to a new level Saturday, Feb. 3 while capturing their third consecutive Penobscot Valley Conference championship at Sereyko Gymnasium on the campus of Penobscot Valley High School. The Ponies also won the conference title for the fifth time in six years.

The Foxcroft Academy indoor track and field closed out the 2017-18 Penobscot Valley Conference/Eastern Maine Indoor Track League regular season with a meet at the University of Maine on Feb. 3.

Since dropping the first two games of the season -- both dates happened to be away contests -- the Greenville High School boys basketball team has been on a roll with 12 straight wins. The Lakers increased the streak to a lucky 13 with a week left in the regular season after defeating Penquis Valley High School on the road 63-30 in an interclass matchup on Jan. 31.

The game may have featured neighboring rivals, both with high winning percentages on the season, competing intensely on the court, but the Piscataquis Community High School and Dexter Regional High School girls basketball teams played for a greater purpose during the Jan. 26 contest. The two teams and their fans worked together for the fifth annual “Fill the Gym For Childhood Cancer Event” to benefit the Harmony-based Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foundation

A 19-7 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter helped the Foxcroft Academy boys pull away from Old Town High School and earn a 67-52 victory during a Jan. 25 contest between two teams battling for berths in the upcoming Class B North postseason.

The Foxcroft Academy girls indoor track and field team finished eighth among a field of eight schools -- with no score -- at a Jan. 29 Penobscot Valley Conference/Eastern Maine Indoor Track League meet at the University of Maine.

Cheering teams from Foxcroft Academy, Dexter and Penquis each took part in regional cheering championships on Saturday in Bangor.

Both home teams emerged victorious as Dexter Regional High School hosted regional rival Penquis Valley High School in a girls/boys doubleheader on the court on Thursday, Jan. 18. The Tiger girls won 53-46 and the Dexter boys earned a 59-30 victory.

The Foxcroft Academy indoor track and field team was in action on Jan. 15 in a Penobscot Valley Conference/Eastern Maine Indoor Track League meet -- rescheduled from two days prior due to the weather -- at the University of Maine. Both Pony teams would finish sixth among six schools taking part.

HOULTON — Joseph Cyr of the Houlton Pioneer Times, a contributor to the Piscataquis Observer over the years, has been selected as the Maine winner of the National Sports Media Association Sportswriter of the Year award.

BANGOR -- Husson University women’s basketball freshman Megan Peach, a resident of Garland and a 2017 graduate of Dexter Regional High School, was selected as the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 14.

Dexter won by a final score of 60-44 to improve to 7-2 at the midway point of the 2017-18 season. The victory gave the Tigers a season sweep of the Wolverines (who fell to 3-7) as Dexter won in East Millinocket 56-43 on Dec. 15.

RJ Nelson is a senior wrestler at Foxcroft Academy. He is a team captain and wrestles at 132 pounds. On Jan. 6 the Pony wrestling team competed at the Warrior Clash at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport. Nelson would not only become a tournament champion, but he also reached an incredible milestone by winning his 150th career match.

The Foxcroft Academy swim team was on the road Jan. 12 with a dual meet against Ellsworth High School. The Pony girls fell by a score of 114-38 and the host Eagle boys won 129-22.

The Foxcroft Academy wrestling team continues on its grueling schedule. This time the wrestlers traveled to Newport on Jan. 6 to compete at the Warrior Clash at Nokomis High School.
