Sen. Paul Davis, R-Sangerville presented Dexter Police Officer Kenneth Spaulding with a Legislative Sentiment at the June 14 Dexter Town Council meeting. The sentiment recognizes Officer Spaulding’s achievement of earning a 2018 Community Hero Real Heroes Award from the American Red Cross of Maine for saving the life of an infant who had stopped breathing by performing CPR until an ambulance crew arrived to take over.

The final Students of the Month at Piscataquis Community Elementary School were honored in front of their peers during the June 15 morning meeting, the last day of school.

In the realm of wildlife management we have come a long way since the days of Aldo Leopold, the American father of enlightened wildlife stewardship. Leopold in his writings and teaching warned about the destructive impact that industrial progress and technology was having on America’s wildlife. In fact, wildlife planning, protection and well-funded conservation efforts have led to an era when we have more big game in this country than ever before. Increasingly in some cases, there is an excess of wild critters.

Grade 5 students at Piscataquis Community Elementary School recently took a journey back in time by studying American history and then applying what they earned through a play performed for their families and the community last month.

For the last year in-town Monson has been undergoing many changes through the Portland-based Libra Foundation. The organization has purchased more than 20 properties along Main Street and across town, including the former Monson Elementary School that most recently served as a community center, and many of the buildings have been torn down or are in the renovation process for the purpose of transforming the community into the Monson Arts artists’ colony as part of the foundation’s mission of making contributions to worthy causes across Maine to spur economic and creative growth.

Last month three bids for building a Piscataquis County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) storage garage all came in multiple times more than the project budget. The structure will now be going out to bid again, this time with some revisions to the specs.

Two employees of the Greenville school system were honored at a retirement ceremony in the auditorium of the school on Tuesday, June 4. Roxanne Cunningham had been teaching for 39 years and Vera Davis was a bookkeeper for 16 years. Altogether these ladies had served the Greenville school system for a whopping 55 years!

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine and Angus King, I-Maine announced that a combined total of $2.35 million in federal funding has been awarded to five recipients in Maine to clean up and redevelop brownfield sites. Among the recipients is the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council, which has a $350,000 allocation.

Art Wheaton is the “perfect storm” kind of guy to write a classy, keepsake book about hunting the king of game birds. For a lot of reasons. Art, a son of the late Downeast guide Woodie Wheaton, cut his teeth on grouse and gun dogs. He and his family moved to Forest City ( near Princeton) when Art was 11 years old. From the time he was 15 years old, Art guided landlocked salmon and smallmouth bass anglers from his folks’ sporting camp, Wheaton’s Lodge, and hunted grouse and woodcock every October.

A proposed $14,575,628 SAD 46 budget for the 2018-19 academic year was approved at the annual district meeting on June 7 at the Ridge View Community School. The spending package will now go to a referendum in the towns of Dexter, Exeter, Garland and Ripley on Tuesday, June 12 with residents of the four communities voting either “yes” or “no” to make a district-wide decision.

A Superior Court judge has denied a new trial to a Guilford man serving two life sentences for the 1999 execution-style slayings of his ex-girlfriend and the toddler she was babysitting.
