6 years ago Contra dances become monthly event at The Commons at Central Hall Contra dances held over the past few months at The Commons at Central Hall have proved so popular that they will become a regular monthly event. Part of the allure of contra dance is that a lesson is provided by the caller before the band plays each tune, so everyone has opportunities to learn. More experienced dancers and beginners are blended together as the music and the caller’s instructions move them down the line of ever-changing couples on the dance floor.

The interactive “Take the Fear Out of Writing” class will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at The Commons at Central Hall, Dover-Foxcroft. It will continue weekly through Nov. 9.

6 years ago Center Theatre crowns talent search winner On Saturday, Sept. 15 the Center Theatre hosted the grand finale of its first annual Central Maine Talent Search. The show, sponsored by J.M. Arbour Wealth Management, featured six talented performers, all of whom had been winners of preliminary events. The six performers competed to see who would win the $500 grand prize and at the end of the night Parker Kelley came out on top.

6 years ago Piscataquis Valley Fair returns for the 131st year Aug. 23-26 This year marks the 131st anniversary of the Piscataquis Valley Fair, which began in 1887. The 2018 fair will run from Thursday, Aug. 23 to Sunday, Aug. 26 at the fairgrounds located at 77 Fairview Avenue. The four days will feature exhibitions, rides, concerts and fun for all ages.

The meal, a “Farm-to-Table Suppah,” is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with “suppah” starting at 6 p.m. Live old-time Americana sting-band music will be played by the local band Timberdoodle.
