On Thursday, May 10 residents of the SAD 41 towns of Atkinson, Brownville, LaGrange and Milo will head to their respective polls to vote on an approximate $2.3 million heating system upgrade and energy efficiency project at the Penquis Valley School.

After visiting Mount Desert Island High School took its first lead of a May 5 Class B North softball Saturday matinee during the top of the fifth inning at 4-3, Foxcroft Academy responded with an even bigger inning. The Ponies scored five times in the bottom of the fifth and the five-run outburst helped the team hold on for the 8-4 victory to improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season.

A proposed $7,087,042 SAD 4 budget for the 2018-19 school year was approved -- with all 20 articles being passed as written over about 20 minutes with nearly 50 registered voters present -- during a district budget meeting on May 3 at Piscataquis Community Elementary School.

A pitching change for the host Dexter Regional High School worked to perfection as Tiger freshman Avery Herrick recorded a strikeout and induced a ground ball out as the team held on for a 4-3 win and its first victory of the young season.

The latest group of Students of the Month at Piscataquis Community Elementary School were honored in front of their peers during an April 27 morning meeting, a session moved back one week from the usual third Friday of the month due to the April vacation.

All seven items passed as written during the 2018 annual town meeting on the morning of April 28 in the gymnasium at the Morton Avenue Municipal Building. The articles making up the 2018-19 municipal budget will now go to a referendum vote on Tuesday, June 12.

“We have before us the moratorium again and the need for a public hearing,” Select Vice Chair Cindy Freeman Cyr said during a April 23 selectmen’s meeting. The board then signed the notice to hold a public hearing on an extension, which would run for another 180 days from May 26 to Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14.

Several years ago many Maine municipalities made a choice for waste disposal, with most opting to either remain with the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company (PERC) or go with the forthcoming Fiberight facility in Hampden. For the county facilities in Lily Bay and Orneville townships, county officials voted to continue the relationship with PERC.

In an effort to help town businesses and bring in more visitors, the Dexter Town Council is considering a proposed ordinance that would open seven town streets to ATVs. The amendment to the motor vehicle and traffic regulations was discussed during an April 19 meeting and was moved to a public hearing for the next meeting on Thursday, May 17.
