Schenck gets past PCHS in 2018-19 opener
GUILFORD — For a quarter the Class C North Piscataquis Community High School and Class D North Schenck High School of East Millinocket stayed even as the two programs were tied at five points apiece after eight minutes of play during the 2018-19 season opener on Friday, Dec. 7. From there the visiting Wolverines had a 10-0 run during much of the second quarter and a 25-3 advantage in the third to win 45-22.
Junior Olivia Riitano recorded the first Pirate point of the season as she converted a foul shot at the 5:13-mark of the opening session. Freshman Elizabeth Kendall hit a pair of shots for the floor as the two combined for the five points in quarter No. 1 to match the five for Schenck.
Another two from Riitano in the post came after a Schenck 3-pointer, and the Wolverines followed with a 10-0 run to go ahead 18-7. Just before the buzzer sophomore Meagan Lemieux connected from beyond the 3-point line to cut the deficit to eight.
After the halftime break Schenck had its 25-3 third quarter. Wolverine senior Samantha Falone picked up 12 of her game-high 17 points during this stretch, on four field goals, a 3-pointer, and a free throw. Her classmate Julia Stanley added six in the third for 10 overall as the two both reached double figures on the scoring sheet.
The Pirates had the point advantage in the fourth, 9-2. Junior Macee Pearl picked up all five of her team-high points in the last 8-minute session on a 3-point shot and a jumper. Freshman Haylee Hartford and Sydney Hutchins had two apiece in their high school debuts on a respective offensive rebound and put back and lay-up.
The two teams are scheduled to play again in East Millinocket on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 17.
