Acting on authorization from Congress, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently hired four private debt collection agencies to pursue overdue federal taxes. Unfortunately, this new activity has prompted some scammers to contact taxpayers, including Maine residents, pretending to be collectors working on behalf of the IRS, and demanding immediate payment.

Partners for Peace, the domestic violence resource center formerly known as Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance, will provide an art-based support group for anyone affected by domestic abuse or violence. The group will meet at the Partners for Peace Mechanic Street office starting on Tuesday, Aug. 1 from 1–3 p.m. for four consecutive weeks.

Like a siren's song, the allure of fundraising totals and polling results is irresistible to the media. It never fails, no matter how pointlessly irrelevant it is, they will spend an unconscionable amount of time and energy "breaking down" the gubernatorial race, and analyzing who is up and who is down based on those two metrics.

On Tuesday night (July 18), the SAD 4 budget committee met and applied the additional state money in excess of $200,000 as revenue to the 2018 fiscal year budget. That will help to lower town assessments. At the beginning of the meeting, the committee skipped the time for audience input, but later asked if there were questions, which it tried to answer. However, at no time did the committee solicit recommendations for further cutting of expenses.

A few years back, I had the pleasure of meeting Russell and Cynthia Scott for the first time. The Scotts own and operate Fresh Air Dogs in Guilford, a business they created about eight years ago; one that would become “your dog’s favorite place to learn, play, and stay.” Some might call them a doggie boarding business, offering day care (play-dates) and overnights (sleepovers).

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will hold public hearings on proposed fishing regulations in the upcoming weeks. The closest hearing to Greenville will be in Millinocket at the Baxter Park Inn Conference Room, (935 Central Street) at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26.

Emily Curtis, a senior at Foxcroft Academy, recently published her first poetry collection, “in the absence of the sun.” Curtis, a student-athlete involved in field hockey, swim, and tennis as well as Key Club, National Honor Society, and Student Council, decided to share another of her talents, one that she has kept hidden -- until now.

"Has anyone signed up for Informed Delivery?" I asked the postmaster in our small, rural post office. I read the U.S. Post Office Welcome to Informed Delivery brochure, but still couldn't figure out why I would want the post office to email me photocopies of the mail arriving in my mailbox each day. What's the advantage? My mail is delivered daily to my mail box anyway.
