Organizers are getting ready for the 2018 Arts Alive event at Piscataquis Community Elementary School in Guilford. The Arts Alive tradition dates back to 1982 and this year’s event is scheduled for Friday, June 8. Over 100 volunteers will be coming to the school to share their talents and skills as students in pre-kindergarten through grade 8 take part in various activities and projects, which in past years from ranged from shaving cream art to drumming to karate.

Maine Woods Forever is pleased to announced that the Greenville-based Natural Resource Education Center (NREC) Maine Woods Explorers program is one of three recipients of the 2018 Teddy Roosevelt Maine Conservation Award – a youth-oriented award created to recognize young people and youth groups whose efforts are in the spirit of Roosevelt’s conservation ethic and achievements. The award recognizes what Maine’s youth are doing to appreciate and conserve their forest heritage. It also encourages them to become future conservation leaders.

Join us for a morning bird walk on Saturday, May 12 as we explore springtime birds at the Law Farm. The Piscataquis County Soil & Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) will be hosting birding expert Bob Duchesne for a walk, starting at 8 a.m., to view year-round birds in Maine and also some returning springtime birds.

The Dexter Public Health Association, a non-profit committed to providing in-home, free nursing services regardless of income status, has been selected as a beneficiary of the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag Program for the month of May.

The Harold J. Crosby Community Band will be presenting its Carnival of Melody concert on at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 6 at the Dexter Town Hall. This annual event is a culmination of practices that began in January.

The Maine Baseball Hall of Fame will welcome its new members during its 48th annual induction ceremony and banquet scheduled for Sunday, July 22, at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland. Dave Gaw of Guilford, who was selected last year but was unable to attend, also will be inducted.

Due to unsafe water levels on the Piscataquis River with a lot of debris flowing in the water, the 2018 Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Piscataquis River Race has been postponed from April 28 to Saturday, May 26. Plans are for the 46th annual event to also start at 10 a.m. on the new date -- with registration beforehand -- as paddlers will travel from King Cummings Park in Guilford down to Dover-Foxcroft across the West Main Street from Foxcroft Academy.

On April 27 SeDoMoCha Middle School art teacher Bobbi Tardif of RSU 68 in Dover-Foxcroft was presented with the 2018 Maine Art Education Association's Outstanding Service Through the Profession honor during a ceremony at Lewiston Middle School.
