At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 the Abbot and Monson historical societies will host a dedication ceremony at the moose horns on Route 15 in Abbot. The original moose horns were placed at this location by Monson settler Joseph Bearce in 1817 to mark the path from the Abbot-Million Acre Trail to the emerging town of Monson.

It wasn’t so long ago that almost everyone belonged to a fraternal, religious, lineage, literary, or musical society. They enjoyed the meetings, socializing with friends, gossiping among themselves, and doing good along the way. They worked hard but made time to attend meetings of the Grange, Masons, Elks, Knights of Pythias, the DAR, or any of a number of other groups.

Friends of Community Fitness held its 13th annual Fitness 5K, as part of the Piscataquis River Festival, on the morning of July 28 with the following results (again this year entrants ran the course in Guilford and Sangerville against traffic).

Three people died Monday, July 30 when their small plane crashed in Greenville on its way to Prince Edward Island, police said.

A 47-year-old woman (Baxter State Park does not release the names of injured parties) was rescued by a Maine Forest Service helicopter off the Abol Trail on Katahdin at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 30. She was transported to Millinocket Regional Hospital by the Millinocket Fire Department after a short transport to Caribou Pit in the south end of the park.

Andrew Harris said the last time David Mallett performed at DeerTrees Theatre in Harrison was about 20 years ago. Mr. Harris, DeerTrees’ Artistic and Executive Director, was speaking to the July 21 audience — including me — waiting to hear a live concert from “David Mallett and Friends,” with Michael Burd (bass), Robby Coffin (guitar), Roy Clark (keyboard) and Susan Ramsey (violin, viola, background vocals).

An essential tool for hiking enthusiasts, the newest edition of the “AMC Maine Mountain Guide” features more trails than ever before. Compiled and edited by avid hiker Carey Kish of Mount Desert, the 11th edition of the guidebook describes more than 625 trails on 300 Maine mountains.

Greenville bush pilot Dick Folsom was a man who left his mark in the annals of Maine’s outdoor history.
