I wanted to write about women’s soccer this week. On Friday, Team USA will play France in a highly anticipated match up of giants in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Mid-Maine Duplicate Bridge Club played June 24 at the Guilford Memorial Library with the following results: first place, Ron Lyford of Hartland and Harry Bridge of St. Albans; second, Priscilla Higgins of Dover-Foxcroft and Barbara Greenburg of Dexter; and third, Herb Greenberg and Jim Greehey of Dexter.

On June 21 the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) held a Families in the Outdoors: Garden Fun! event at the Law Farm. During this event district staff, volunteers and Piscataquis Regional YMCA Camp Katahdin campers worked together to plant a new sunflower pollinator garden for the children’s area at the farm.

The 2019 Penquis Rec Girls Softball League playoffs and championship games were held on Saturday, June 22 at Veterans Memorial Park in Sangerville. In the grade 3-4 division, Palmyra defeated the hometown Pirates from Guilford/Sangerville.

On behalf of our 230,000 members statewide, AARP Maine applauds our state legislators and Gov. Mills for passing a strong package of bills to make prescription drugs more affordable and more accessible in Maine. Thousands of Mainers take prescription medications. For many, there is no alternative to alleviate crippling pain or manage chronic illnesses. For others, prescription drugs literally keep them alive. This legislative package could not come soon enough.

Again in 2019 the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival kicked off on Saturday morning, June 22, with the Piscataquis Regional YMCA’s Earn Your Whoopie Pie 3K, along with a 1K kids fun run. The 10th annual races took place on a new course, both starting and ending at the PRYMCA on Park Street with the older runners covering portions of Park Street, Autumn Avenue and Summer and North streets.

A 61-year-old man from Utah was airlifted off the Hamlin Ridge trail on Mount Katahdin early Monday morning, June 24 after a long struggle to descend to Chimney Pond. He suffered injuries from a 10- to 15-foot fall on the Cathedral trail on the afternoon of Saturday, June 22.

The Abbott Memorial Library board of trustees are pleased to announce new summer hours for the library’s Makerspace. Mrs. Millette will have the Makerspace open Tuesday to Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Three young makers from the Abbott Memorial Library’s Makerspace recently set up shop at a roadside stand and sold $97 of items they had made. With the money they purchased supplies to donate back to the Makerspace in Dexter.
