Jennifer Sylvain, a member of the Sarah Elizabeth Palmer Tent #23, Daughters of Union Veterans (DUV) in Dover-Foxcroft and also patriotic instructor officer for the Maine State DUVCW, presented an American Flag to Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society President Mary Annis (who is also a member of the Tent).

Growing Through Grief is one of Pine Tree Hospice’s bereavement programs for adults. The Growing Through Grief program begins with a facilitated grief support group which is then followed by a presentation or workshop.

Hunter orange is a vibrant color with one job: to keep people visible. Throughout November, during Maine’s firearm season for deer, hunters are required by law to wear this bright hue. But for non-hunters, donning this color is optional.

When I was a younger, more avid book collector, I dreamed of living in a home with a personal library, my books catalogued on floor-to-ceiling dark wood shelves in sections: history, music, politics, biography, and a special spot for books of collected letters, journals, and diaries of notable writers and politicians. John Steinbeck’s “Journal of a Novel,” President Reagan’s “The Reagan Diaries,” and “Selected Letters of William Faulkner,” for example.

A party of 33 from Maine, including 12 students, ages 9-21 from the Portland area, Dover-Foxcroft, Waldoboro and Farmington, will meet with elected officials on Capitol Hill regarding climate change legislation. The students will participate in trainings on Nov. 11 in preparation for the Nov. 12 meetings with U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden and members of U.S. Sen. Angus King’s staff.

Our community should consider renovating vacant houses to provide homeless citizens safe, affordable shelter.

Most of us who spend time deer hunting have had encounters with deer ticks, the bad ones, or know someone with Lyme disease. Earlier this fall, University of Maine Professor Jim Dill, a tick expert, appeared as a guest on my Sunday night call-in radio program, Maine Outdoors. The phones rang constantly the entire hour as listeners cued up to ask their questions of Professor Dill. Dill heads up a new diagnostics research facility at the University of Maine that opened this past April.

Every Veterans Day, the Three Rivers Kiwanis of Milo-Brownville serves dinner to all local veterans and their families. This year the meal will be held on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Milo Town Hall.

The Dexter Regional High School boys cross country took part in the 2019 Class C championship on Nov. 2 at the Twin Brook Recreation Area. The Tigers joined teams also placing in the top half at the regional meets the weekend before, and finished 14th of 15 squads with a score of 348 points.
