Horizon Scholarships awarded to nine current and future Foxcroft Academy students

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — Nine students were awarded Horizon Scholarships from the Board of Trustees at Foxcroft Academy on May 6.  Horizon Scholarships provide financial support for exceptional academic experiences not presently offered at Foxcroft Academy.  Students in grades 8, 9, 10 or 11 who are (or will be) enrolled as a full-time student at Foxcroft Academy are eligible to apply. Horizon Scholarships are funded by income generated from 15 named endowed Horizon Scholarship funds within Foxcroft Academy’s endowment. Approximately $6000 is available to FA students each year for these scholarships.  This year $6,700 was awarded.

    BEING ABLE TO EXPAND THEIR HORIZONS — Nine current and future Foxcroft Academy students were awarded Horizon Scholarships to take part in academic experiences not offered at the school.     Fern Morrison ’15 will be attending the California Nanosystems Institute at UCLA, where she will perform experiments that explore the key concepts of Nanoscience.  Only a handful of high school students are chosen for this program.  Fern was awarded the Peter and Marion Plouff Scholarship.
    Sophomore Jenny Boyer will be traveling to Costa Rica to attend a Teen Spanish Program in San Jose.  She will stay with a host family for two weeks, where she will be immersed in the Spanish culture and language. The Peter and Marion Plouff Scholarship will also assist with Jenny’s financial need.
    The Virginia Preston Art Fund will provide freshman Hunter Giacomuzzi with some funding to attend the Creative Design at CAD Camp at the University of Maine.
    The two-week Marine Science Camp at the Acadia Institute of Oceanography in Seal Harbor will be attended by Brandon Plante, a sophomore considering marine science as a possible career choice.
    Thanks to the friends and family of Foxcroft alumna Shirley Rowell Gammon ’50, Annie Rich ’15 of Monson will be attending the USM School of Music in Gorham. Annie’s goal is to major in music in college and one day become a professional musician.
    The Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia will play host to one of the Global Youth Villages this summer, an international summer program. Sarah Phillips ’15 of Harmony will be attending the 12-day camp thanks to funds provided by a Jim Brown Horizon Scholarship.
    Next month aspiring professional golfer Colby Snell ’14, son of Scott ’89 and Alison Dunham Snell ’90, will be participating in the American High School Golf Championships at St. Andrews in Scotland. He is the recipient of the FA Scholarship Association Horizon Scholarship.
    Lastly, two eighth graders are the benefactors of Horizon Scholarships this year. Rose Kreider will attend the Maine Summer Youth Music Camp at UMaine, where she hopes to enhance both her instrumental and singing voice expertise. The Barb Goodwin Horizon Scholarship Fund is helping Rose with her expenses.
    Meanwhile the New England Music Camp in Sidney will be home for three weeks for Jordan Marshall, who according to his music teacher has an incredible enthusiasm for music and the performing arts.  Although still in middle school, Jordan seems intent on making music his life’s career choice. Bessie Bush, mother of Terrance Bush ’65, created a Horizon Scholarship Fund in her son’s memory in 1998 to honor his love of music, so this selection seems like a perfect fit.
    Since 1993, the Horizon Scholarship program has awarded more than $110,000 to approximately 185 students searching for unique life and learning experiences outside the regular classroom. The Foxcroft Academy Board of Trustees is grateful to those alumni and friends who deemed these opportunities to be of such vital importance to our students that they created these endowed scholarship funds, some of which are listed above.  Other funds not awarded this year include the Richard Snyder Fund, A. Steward Bush Fund, Michael Bush Fund, Myron Dean Horizon Fund, Gordon and Wilma Andrews Horizon Fund, Ivan Marshall Fund, and the Everett and Evelyn Johnston Horizon Fund.
