TCTC students drive home with trucking honors

    AUGUSTA — On April 10 the Career and Technical Education Truck Driving Championship was held. The competition has been re-named the Dick Dolloff Memorial Driving Championship in regard and respect for the man who started the competition over 17 years ago.
    The five vocational/technical centers from across Maine with truck driver training programs participated in the one-day competition at the Augusta Civic Center. Commercial truck driving students from the Tri-County Technical Center (TCTC) in Dexter competed in the driving skills competition.
    The students had to do a safety inspection of a commercial vehicle, which was judged by two Maine State Troopers from the Troop K Commercial Law Enforcement Unit of the Maine State Police.
    Competitors performed cornering maneuvers, parallel parking and alley-dock backing maneuvers as required by the State of Maine driving test for a tractor-trailer combination. This event tests the skills and abilities of the student as well as handling themselves under pressure.
    This year TCTC students stood out with winning:  first place was Shawn Nightingale (junior from Dexter Regional High School) and second Devin Winslow (senior from Nokomis Regional High School). The TCTC students also won the overall team trophy.
