Pine Tree Hospice’s third annual Triple Crown golf tournament

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The much anticipated third annual Triple Crown golf tournament gets underway at three local golf courses on three Sundays in May. Proceeds of the charity event benefit Pine Tree Hospice (PTH), which trains and coordinates volunteers to provide assistance to individuals with progressive, life-limiting conditions as well as to their family and caregivers.

Teams of four are encouraged to compete in one, two or all three Sundays May 5, May 19 and May 26. Prizes will be awarded each day. Teams that compete all three days are eligible for the coveted Triple Crown accolade. There will be a $50,000 Shoot-Out held at the end of the tournament sponsored by Solutions Consulting Group, LLC. Ten players from the three tournaments will qualify by being the closest to the pin winners (three men, three women), as well as the four overall Triple Crown winners.
“People can expect fun and laid-back days on the golf course throughout our series of tournaments,” according to Ethan Annis, an organizer of the event and a member of the PTH board of directors. “Playing three different courses in the community that we serve has been important for our fundraiser and we are thankful to the courses for the opportunity once again this year.”
In addition to great golfing, participation is all the more rewarding knowing the tournament “ultimately helps friends and neighbors experiencing a difficult time in their lives,” notes PTH Executive Director Jane Stitham.
The tournament has net and gross winners that are reflected by a person’s golf handicap. A new provision instituted this year allows a team to substitute a player with a higher or equal handicap. Any and all ages and skill levels can play.
Generously hosting the tournament again this year are the Whitetail Golf Course in Charleston (May 5), Dexter Municipal Golf Course (May 19) and Foxcroft Golf Course (May 26). All three are nine-hole courses, which are played twice.
Teams register at 7:30 a.m. A shotgun start is at 8 a.m. A 1 p.m. shotgun start will be added, if necessary, depending on the number of teams.
The fee is per player per course or if a player signs up to play all three courses.  Lunch is included in the fee.
In 2012, an average of 17 teams competed each of the three Sundays to net $7,872 for PTH, which relies solely on fundraisers like this, grants, donations and collaborative supports to subsist. “The Triple Crown Golf Tournament is becoming a stronger and better event every year,” observes Annis.
Whitetail Golf Course (285-7730) is at 373 School Road, Charleston, Dexter Municipal Golf Club (924-6477) is at 35 Sunrise Avenue in Dexter and Foxcroft Golf Club (564-8887) is at 84 Foxcroft Center Road in Dover-Foxcroft.
Players should call the courses to register to play and reserve carts. For more information about the tournament, call Pine Tree Hospice at 564-4346.
