Illustrated Civil War lecture April 30

    SANGERVILLE — The public is invited to hear Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth Jr. give a free illustrated lecture of photographs which illustrate Maine’s participation in the Civil War, 150 years ago at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the Sangerville Town Hall Meeting  Room, sponsored by the Sangerville Historical Society.

    From 1861 to 1865 Maine contributed more than 70,000 troops to the war effort, about 10,000 of whom did not return, according to Shettleworth. The historic photographs to be shown capture images of the state’s military and political leaders, enlisted soldiers, regimental encampments and veterans’ activities after the war. Well-known Maine figures such as Vice President Hannibal Hamlin and Gen. Joshua Chamberlain appear in the pictures. Refreshments will be served.
    The Sangerville Historical Society’s second annual plant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Sangerville Town Hall, rain or shine. Various houseplants, annuals, perennials, shrubs, herbs and vegetable plants will be on sale. Donations of plants and slips will be  most appreciated.
    The society also will hold a yard sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 22, at the museum located across from Numberall Stamp and Tool Co.  Donations will be accepted with the exception of large appliances and furniture.
    The plant and yard sale will help fund renovations that will begin soon by Charleston Correctional Facility inmates. Water damaged the front entrance to the museum and the renovations will focus on that area.
