MILO — The Piscataquis Amateur Radio Club has announced its next licensing class. The American Radio Relay League-sanctioned class will provide an introduction to the exciting world of amateur radio in addition to preparation for taking the license exam.

The class will meet Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. at the Mayo Hospital Resource Center in Dover-Foxcroft from Jan. 7 through March 24. The class is free but there are costs for the required book and the FCC license exam fee.

From community service and emergency communications to exploring the world from the comfort of home, amateur “ham” radio is diverse, offering countless ways to communicate. Some use it to keep in touch or personal safety while enjoying outdoor recreation. A vast assortment of on-air competitions and operating achievement awards will satisfy any competitive spirit. Many enjoy learning more about communications technology or building their own antennas and equipment. The possibilities are endless.

In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere the class will cover basics of electricity, electronic components and circuits, fundamentals of radio, setting up a station and communicating with other hams using a variety of methods. Additional topics include license privileges, regulations and safety.

Those wishing to take this year’s class are urged to register by Nov. 30,. To register or for more information please call Debbie at 965-2310 or email kb1wry@gmail.com.
