Northern Light Health recognized for leadership in environmental sustainability

BREWER — In recognition of achievement and innovation in healthcare sustainability, all nine hospitals within the Northern Light Health system and the system itself, have received the Greenhealth Champion Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading membership and networking organization for sustainable healthcare. The Greenhealth Champion Award celebrates healthcare facilities and systems championing the growth and development of their sustainability programs, and only organizations that have completed a greenhouse gas inventory including Scopes 1, 2 and elements of Scope 3 are eligible for this recognition.

Additionally, Northern Light Health was awarded the Circle of Excellence Award in the climate category. The Circle of Excellence Award celebrates 10 hospitals or healthcare systems who have not only earned an award for all-around sustainability achievement but have been identified as the top scoring programs for each sustainability category. To be eligible for this award, applicants must demonstrate true leadership in the program area through advanced actions.

“Although our organization’s formal commitment to environmental sustainability is only a few years old, the passion and leadership of our team members are making a meaningful difference,” Tim Doak, chief environmental sustainability officer, said “We are honored to be recognized at the national level for our initiatives.”

Systemwide, Northern Light Health has cut Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 12% toward our pledge of a 50% reduction by 2030.
