UMaine Extension hosts pasture walk and barbecue at Knight Family Farm
GARLAND – University of Maine Cooperative Extension will host an educational pasture walk for farmers at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 at Knight Family Farm, 30 Jones Road in Garland. This hands-on pasture walk will focus on evaluating and improving pasture management for livestock producers.
“The Good, the Bad, and the Weedy: Making Every Acre Count” is designed for farmers raising cattle, sheep, goats or pasture-raised pigs and will cover the art and science of grazing strategies, grazing management, forage production/utilization and forage species composition, with the goal of improving pastures and livestock production in a sustainable manner. Participants will learn practical skills to measure forage on their farm utilizing grazing sticks, plates, frames and grids. Instructors include Jaime Garzon, UMaine Extension forage educator; Glenda Pereira, UMaine Extension dairy specialist; Colt W. Knight, UMaine Extension livestock specialist; and Jeff Lehmkuhler, University of Kentucky beef specialist.
The event is free and includes a southern-style pit barbecue meal.
