Milo Garden Club news
MILO — A sprouting sweet potato, Conservation-in-a-Cup, and a birthday cake with ice cream were some of the fun features at the Milo Garden Club meeting held on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
Members and guests were fascinated with a brief presentation by member Ethel Ann Russell. As a child, her mother showed her how to sprout a white potato. Over the years, Ethel Ann experimented doing the same with different plants. For the meeting, she brought in a sweet potato and a Vidalia onion which she had sprouted at home. Ethel Ann explained that the bottom of each had been cut away then the upper half was placed in a water filled jar lid. She then set them on a window sill to enjoy the sunlight.
Emerging from the “eyes” of the sweet potato were tiny vines, several bearing a leaf or two. The Vidalia onion sprouted four tall, thick onion greens which she looked forward to using in salads or cooking. Ethel Ann’s presentation inspired questions, discussions and suggestions, “Perhaps we can have some of our sprouting experiments at the Annual Summer Fair in August.”

Since conservation is one of the Garden Club Federation of Maine’s missions, Milo Garden Club members have begun the practice of bringing their own cups for coffee, tea, hot chocolate or water to monthly meetings. Named Conservation-in-a-Cup, the goal is to lessen waste and to reduce the use of plastics. This is not a mandatory rule. Forgiveness is definitely given for forgetfulness.
During the meeting, a small birthday celebration was held recognizing all Milo Garden Club member’s birthdays. A lovely cake was served with ice cream after a delicious luncheon which included wonderful and warming homemade soups made by the committee of Pauline Mullins, Joanne DeWitt, Barbara Reed and Beverly Martell.
Join the Milo Garden Club on Feb. 10 for musical entertainment. The meeting starts at 1 p.m. and is located at the Kiwanis Building, 15 Harris Pond Road, which can be found behind NAPA on outer Park Street in Milo.
