Dexter girls roll post Orono

DEXTER — The Dexter Regional High School girls jumped to an 11-0 lead during a Class C North matchup with Orono High School on the evening of Friday, Jan. 9. From there the Tigers went ahead 18-9 after the first quarter and never led by less than eight points the rest of the way in a 56-35 victory.

Dexter, which this year is a cooperative program with Piscataquis Community High School of Guilford, improved to 6-4 and earned a season sweep of the Red Riots (3-6). The Tigers won in Orono 65-27 on Dec. 13.

A jumper by senior Desiree Adams, 3-point shot from senior Kallie Stone and two more threes by sophomore Ella McClintock-Hatch gave Dexter the early 11-0 lead as the Tiger defense kept Orono off the scoreboard until the 3:33-mark of the opening quarter.

The Red Riots quickly made the score 11-5, but Dexter closed out the quarter on a 7-4 run for the 18-9 advantage.

Dexter tied its biggest lead of the game with the final score of 56-35, also being up by 21 in the third quarter at 45-24. The team would make nine shots from behind the 3-point arc for nearly half of the total scoring output. 

McClintock-Hatch scored a game-high 14 points, including the pair of 3-pointers she made in the opening minutes of the contest. She added three shots from the floor and a pair of fourth quarter foul shots.

GAME-HIGH 14 POINTS — Sophomore Ella McClintock-Hatch led all players with 14 points, including this layup in the third quarter as well as a pair of 3-pointers in the opening minutes to help Dexter jump out to an 11-0 lead.

Junior Brookelin Dorman had 12 points off the bench to also reach double figures, including twice making a steal on the Red Riot side of the court and taking the ball the other way for a layup.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Cookson picked up 11 points with most of these coming on a game-high three 3-pointers for a third of Dexter’s long-distance shots.

Junior Nina Mitchell recorded a team-high eight points for Orono, with four of her points coming on free throws including three of these in the fourth quarter. Seniors Carmen Miller and Dakota Shorey were next on the team’s scoring sheet with six points apiece. Miller sank two 3-point shots for her half dozen points.
