Piscataquis County Jail meets deadline to submit plan addressing health and safety violations

By CBS 13

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis County Jail has met the deadline set by the Maine Department of Corrections to provide a corrective action plan following numerous violations.

Last week, the Dover-Foxcroft jail was ordered to immediately address health and safety concerns after an inspection of the jail found numerous violations.

At the time, the jail also was ordered to stop taking in new inmates.

“Our staff developed a comprehensive correction plan which has been approved by the Department of Corrections Commissioner,” Piscataquis County Sheriff Bob Young said. “The jail is back in business and accepting arrests as we always have done.”

If the jail had not met Friday’s deadline, it could have lost its operating license.

Among the items the Department of Corrections wanted fixed were better tracking of sharps brought into the facility, establishing more nursing oversight and making sure medical records are up-to-date and fully accessible.
