Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union sponsors Pine Tree Hospice Charity Golf Tournament

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Kristen Wortman, executive director for Pine Tree Hospice, announced that Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union has become the major sponsor of their Annual Charity Golf Tournament. The event will be held at Foxcroft Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 16 starting at 8 a.m.

For the fourth year, Guilford resident Nolan Lovell is the chairperson for the event. According to Lovell, a member of the Pine Tree Hospice Board of Directors, the event is the single most important fundraiser of the year for the group.

“Pine Tree Hospice offers free services to residents in Piscataquis County and some adjacent areas, such as Dexter,” Lovell said. “These  non-medical care and comfort services have been free of charge since our founding 40 years ago. In my opinion, this is an amazing record of service to our neighbors who often find themselves isolated and sometimes home-bound due to chronic illness or lack of transportation. Pine Tree Hospice is able to provide these services for two reasons. First, our incredible and compassionate direct care volunteers are the ones to provide the non-medical services to shut-ins, to dementia sufferers and their caregivers and to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. We currently have about 40 direct and indirect volunteers, including four brand new direct caregivers who have recently completed their training.

GOLF TOURNAMONET LEAD SPONSOR — Maria Wooten, left president of Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union, and Eileen Cohen, marketing and events director for the credit union, right, join Pine Tree Hospice Executive Director Kristen Wortman to announce Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union will be the lead sponsor of the Pine Tree Hospice Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Aug. 16 at the Foxcroft Golf Club.

“The second reason we are able to deliver these services is the generosity and support from our communities. When local people support PTH  events and fundraisers, like the golf tournament, they help ensure that the services remain free to those who need companionship and other types of assistance. Some examples are help with shopping, correspondence, or transport to medical appointments. Maine Highlands Federal Credit  Union and the other business sponsors make this tournament possible. And we are immensely appreciative of their support.”

This sentiment of community spirit is echoed by Eileen Cohen, marketing and events director for Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union, “We are honored to support the vital work Pine Tree Hospice provides in our communities. Their commitment to delivering compassionate care and support to  individuals and families is truly inspiring. Through our sponsorship, we hope to help ensure that community members continue to receive the dignity, comfort and care they deserve.”

Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union is headquartered in Dexter, and has offices throughout PTH’s service area including Dover-Foxcroft.

Format for the tournament is 4-person team scramble. Two flights, one at 8 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m., are offered, with a golfers’ lunch in between  flights. Cost per person is $50 which includes a golf cart, lunch and a golfer’s swag bag. A silent auction will take place throughout the day and winners announced at the conclusion of the tournament. Some of the items in the auction include dinner for two at The Quarry Restaurant and a round of golf at The Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunk.

“We are so grateful to Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union for leading the way and for the support from other local businesses,” stated Wortman. “There is still time for other local businesses who are interested in sponsoring the tournament to take advantage of several different options available. There are also a limited number of slots still available for 4-person teams in both flights. But we don’t expect those to stay open long. In past years, these slots fill up fast once we enter August and the tournament gets closer.”

Non-golfers may also choose to support PTH by donating prizes for the silent auction. Popular prizes needed include golf-related items, such as gift  certificates for rounds of golf at courses in the region or golf equipment from a local pro-shop or sporting goods store.
