Public invited to ‘Moosehead Outdoor Summit’ Feb. 12

GREENVILLE – The Northern Forest Center and the Appalachian Mountain Club invite the public to learn about local outdoor recreation initiatives and contribute to an inventory of the area’s outdoor assets and amenities during the Moosehead Outdoor Summit Wednesday, Feb. 12 from 5-8 p.m. at the Bartley Family Event Center in Greenville.

This event is part of a larger effort by the Center and Appalachian Mountain Club to guide investment in the Moosehead area’s outdoor recreation infrastructure and programs. Both groups have secured funding from the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation’s Community Outdoor Recreation Assistance program to conduct inventory and planning projects in the region. The AMC project is focused on its Maine Woods Initiative and surrounding properties, while the Center’s project encompasses the entire Moosehead Lake region.

“There is so much great work happening to expand and improve outdoor offerings in the Moosehead region that it can be hard for folks to keep up and think strategically about the best ways to invest limited resources,” said Mike Wilson, senior program director for the Center. “We hope it will be helpful to have an up-to-date inventory of everything that’s currently available and in development to guide future investment in the region.”

“AMC is incredibly grateful for the 20 years of community support that the Maine Woods Initiative has received from our network of partners,” said Steve Tatko, a lifelong area resident and AMC’s vice president of land and conservation. “As we plan for the future and continue to protect and enhance the public values that AMC stewards on its properties, we welcome the chance to hear about the use of these lands and what opportunities lie ahead. We feel fortunate to be able to share this important landscape with the local community in a way that benefits the ecology and the economy.”

The Feb. 12 Summit will feature free pizza and soft drinks for attendees, updates and video presentations from key partners, and a structured opportunity for participants to add their input to this new inventory of current and planned recreational assets. Attendees will also have the chance to share their ideas on how to improve and sustain recreational experiences for both residents and visitors through a public survey that will be unveiled at the event.

In addition to the Northern Forest Center and the Appalachian Mountain Club, project partners include Destination Moosehead Lake, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lanks, the Town of Greenville, the Moosehead Outdoor Alliance, Moosehead Lake Region Economic Development Corporation, Natural Resources Education Center, and the Elliotsville Foundation.
