DEXTER — Two cats and a dog were killed in a fire that swept through a second-floor apartment at 175 Silvers Mills Road on Dexter Saturday evening, Jan 18.
According to Dexter Assistant Fire Chief Will Lovejoy, the fire was called in around 6:30 p.m. and when firefighters arrived, the fire was already well involved.
There are two buildings on the property, he explained, a house and a garage a few feet away that has an apartment on its second story.
The fire occurred in the apartment. The tenants were not home at the time, he said.
Lovejoy said fire crews were able to douse the fire quickly. “We had a really good fire attack, and were actually able to save about three-quarters of the garage,” he said. The house wasn’t involved in the blaze.
The fire is still under investigation but it appears to have been caused by heat tape that was being used to keep pipes from freezing, said Lovejoy.
