Winter happenings in Dexter

DEXTER — A number of seasonal activities are in store for Dexter this winter.

During the Jan. 9 town council meeting, Town Manager Trampas King mentioned the annual ice fishing derby on Lake Wassookeag will be Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 26 (from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. respectively).

The derby is being moved up several weeks in 2025 from prior years. Event organizing will be transitioning from the Dexter Fish & Game Association to the Dexter Firefighters Association. All proceeds will benefit the firefighters association.

“Ice conditions, I would be very cautious right now,” King said. He said the shorelines should be relatively safe but the ice is probably not thick enough in the middle of the lake.

“Just be very careful if you’re going to go out,” the town manager said.

King said the Dexter Parks and Recreation Department’s ice skating rink is open and more information is available on the department’s Facebook page.

The page says the ice skating hut is open from 6:30-8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays, with skates and concessions available

The Wassookeag Snowmobile Club will be open on weekends from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with breakfast and lunch available to purchase.

In other business, King thanked the public works department for its efforts in maintaining roads. “All three holidays they had to sand stuff, including Thanksgiving,” he said.
