‘Building Community Through the Arts’ in Piscataquis County schools

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Center Theatre is proud to announce its collaboration with the Maine Alliance for Arts Education to bring the innovative program “Building Community Through the Arts” to high schools and middle schools in Piscataquis County starting in 2024.

BCTA is a unique artist residency program that integrates theater and dance into non-arts classrooms. Spanning two weeks, the residency involves entire classes in developing an original dance or theater piece. These performances are based on self-identified social topics or themes drawn from the class curriculum. The program culminates in a regional performance “conference,” where students from various schools showcase their work and reflect on their experiences.

A teacher from Hampden Academy praised the program saying, “We often only see the end result of a creative project. This program allows everyone to witness the process, the struggles, and the unexpected solutions that arise from collaboration.”

Originally created in response to the Columbine High School tragedy, BCTA’s collaborative approach remains as relevant as ever. It aims to break down social barriers among students, elevate aspirations, and positively influence the classroom environment.

The Maine Alliance for Arts Education, founded in 1973 and incorporated in 1980, has been nationally recognized for its work. MAAE promotes education in all arts disciplines for Maine students, fostering a network of teachers, parents, artists, and community supporters.
