Harold Weldon O’Brien

American Flag ColorPO-HaroldOBrienOBDOVER-FOXCROFT – Harold Weldon O’Brien, 85, passed away October 12, 2014, at his home with all the grace and dignity he exuded in life. He was born August 23, 1929, in Sangerville, the only son of a local dentist, Dr. Berry O’Brien and his wife, Margaret.
“Hap” had a joyous childhood and in high school he met the love of his life, Dolores. He married her in 1952, and kept her warm at night until his last breath.
A two-time graduate of the University of Maine, Harold earned his first degree in Zoology before joining the U.S. Navy as an officer, where he served as second in command of the U.S.S. Pecatonia in the Mediterranean Sea. After serving honorably, he returned to U Maine earning a BS in Engineering Physics. In 1962 he took a position with the U.S. government at CRREL in Hanover, NH, as an engineering physicist, where the research his team did on inclimate weather warfare produced data worthy of an interview with Walter Cronkite in a PBS documentary.
Hap and Do raised their children in a loving home. He was a true family man and is leaving his children with many wonderful memories, but his greatest gift is his love forever imprinted in our souls and for that we will never walk alone.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Arlene Sampson, and her husband, Harold.
Harold is survived by Dolores O’Brien, his loving wife of 62 years; daughter, Susan Berger and her husband, David of West Fairlee, VT; son, Berry O’Brien and his wife, Hilary of Dover-Foxcroft; daughter, Sarah O’Brien of Wesley; daughter, Sheri Wilder and her husband, Michael of Lamoine; granddaughters, Erin O’Brien and Kelly Wilder; grandsons, Sean O’Brien, Garrett O’Brien Manning, and Blake Wilder; great-grandchildren, Morgan Sue and Hunter.
At his request, no services will be held at this time. Cremation arrangements by Crosby & Neal, Guilford. For an online guest register, go to www.CrosbyNeal.com.
