New whoopie pie world record awaits official confirmation

PORTLAND — History was made on Friday, June 9, as the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, Wicked Whoopies, and the Portland Sea Dogs set a new Guinness World Record — which is now awaiting official certification. This collaborative effort saw the creation of the World’s Longest Line of Whoopie Pies, more than doubling the requirement of 1,000 whoopies with a staggering lineup of 2,121 whoopie pies measuring a total of 651 feet, three inches in length.

“This record-breaking attempt was about more than just setting a new record; it was a celebration of community spirit and the cherished whoopie pie,” said Patrick Myers, an organizer with the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival. “We’re absolutely thrilled with the successful attempt and eagerly anticipate Guinness World Records’ official confirmation.”

The 2,121 whoopie pies were lined up such that they formed an image of a giant whoopie pie.

The feat, professionally surveyed by Randy Loubier with Owen Haskell Land Surveyors, resulted in a visual spectacle — an image of a colossal whoopie pie almost 20 feet wide and 15 feet tall. A medley of flavors, lemon, vanilla, and chocolate, baked and assembled by the Wicked Whoopies team, added vibrancy to this spectacle. Each pie featured a commemorative sticker marking the event, and  was hand-wrapped by Amy Bouchard, president and owner of Wicked Whoopies.

“We meticulously documented the attempt, leaving nothing to chance. It was a day filled with excitement, fun and a lot of whoopie pies,” said Bouchard. “We can’t wait to hold the official record and are already brainstorming for next year’s Wicked Whoopies’ 30th anniversary celebration.”

Also on hand were the Captain and Celeste from WBLM who witnessed the entire process from start to finish. Izzy Bouchard, from Izzy Bouchard Photography, did complete videography and photography of the event, including amazing drone footage. After the conclusion of the record-breaking event, all whoopie pies were given to attendees of the Sea Dogs game which was sponsored by Trademark Federal Credit Union.

With the record attempt complete, whoopie pie enthusiasts are turning their attention to the 14th annual Maine Whoopie Pie Festival taking place in Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday, June 24. The festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will bring together more than 20 bakers, hundreds of artists, crafters, and vendors, along with food, fun and music, to celebrate the taste of Maine’s official state treat.

More information on the festival, along with advance ticket and token sales, can be found at www.MaineWhoopiePieFestival.com.
