Seven runs in second inning helps Dexter top Foxcroft
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Three unearned runs on one play in the second inning would turn out to be all the Dexter Regional High School softball team needed on the scoreboard as the Tigers defeated Foxcroft Academy 9-2 in an interclass matchup on May 12 at the Morton Avenue field.
Class C North Dexter would add four more runs in the top of the second and won 9-2 to get over .500 at 5-4 and win the team’s third game in its last four contests and fourth of the last six. The stretch includes a 9-7 victory vs. Class B North Foxcroft in Dexter on April 28.
With one out in the top of the second, Dexter had a pair of runners in scoring position for Jillean Poliquin’s at-bat. Poliquin bunted down the first base line but the throw ended up missing its target as Hannah Dean and Kallie Stone both scored. Some mishandling of the softball in rightfield enabled Poliquin to dash around the bases and slide home for the third run on the play.
Three batters later Abilene Corson scored on an error. Desiree Adams followed by dropping a single into centerfield to drive in Jozlynn Paige for a 5-0 lead.
After a Lily Bagley drew a walk to load the bases, Hannah Dean singled to leftfield for two more Tiger runs and a 7-0 advantage for the visitors after the inning.
In the third, Dexter’s Mazie Peach singled to centerfield to score Poliquin from second base. Peach ended the day 2-for-2 while also reaching base in all four of her plate appearances, she also got on via a fielder’s choice and an error. Poliquin reached base three times in four appearances at the plate and she came home each time.
In the top of the fifth Dexter scored its ninth run on a double up the middle into centerfield by Corson to drive in Poliquin. From the leadoff spot, Corson finished 2-of-3 with two walks as well as a game-high three stolen bases.
The Ponies got on the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth. With one out, Alexis Burdin beat the throw to the first base bag to get on. She would go 3-for-3 in her at-bats, with a pair of doubles.
After Aspen Perry walked to move Burdin into scoring position, Brooke Weston singled up the middle to drive in Burdin. Weston would also have a bases on ball to get on base in two of her three trips to the plate.
In the sixth with runners at third and second, Brooke Weston made contact and sent the ball toward third base. Dexter’s only play was at first and while Weston was out, she earned an RBI for bringing Burdin home.
Claire Fogler pitched a complete game for the Tigers, scattering a half dozen hits and three walks while striking out seven in as many innings.
For the Ponies, Weston relieved Perry during the second inning and she tossed 5.2 innings yielding two runs, a half dozen hits, and one walk.
