Maine wilderness airport caters to sportsmen pilots
By Ted Luebbers
Two Falls Airport (ME79) located in Willimantic is well off the beaten path and offers not only good landing facilities but also a chance to fly-in and enjoy many of the outdoor activities this state has to offer.
My wife Joan and I travel the state looking for remote airports, aircraft building projects, or vintage planes. We summer in Maine while escaping the Florida heat and humidity, and we were lucky enough to find Two Falls Camps and their airport.
This airport on the shore of Sebec Lake has a well maintained gravel airstrip (13/31), 3,200 by 45 feet, as well a seaplane landing area (13W/31W) on the Wilson River adjacent to the airport, 5,000 by 500 feet with a dock and a concrete ramp for amphibians. The Unicom frequency for this airport is 122.8 mhz.
There are no aircraft services here but fuel and mechanical issues can be handled at the Greenville Municipal Airport (3B1),13 miles to the northwest. Seaplanes can go to the Moosehead Aero Marine Seaplane Base (52B) at Greenville, only 15 miles northwest.
There appears to be plenty of room off the main runway for tying down airplanes.
This is a private airport and permission is required prior to landing. You may call the owners, Herman or Cindy Bayerdorffer at 207-997-3625. Three of their own planes are hangared here, a Cessna 310, 170, and a 182 on amphibious floats.
What makes this wilderness airport unusual is its location. It is in the geographic center of the state in Piscataquis County, the least populated county in the state. The population of Willimantic is about 150 folks.
The airport is the centerpiece of Two Falls Camps owned and run by the Bayerdorffer Family.
Their airport and rental camps are located on the site of an old spool mill that closed around the beginning of the 1900s when easy access to birch trees ran out. These spools were sold to the many textile mills that were in Maine and throughout New England.
They rent out four large cabins each season and rent boats and outboard motors to fishermen. During hunting season, they sell ammunition.
They seem to cater to pilots and their families who want to enjoy some of the best fishing and hunting Maine has to offer. It looks like a good place for a family summer vacation. Their guest season runs from May 1 to Nov. 30.
Cindy Bayerdorffer said. “Many times a number of pilots might get together and rent a cabin for the season and fly in and out as their schedules permit.”
