Bowerbank Days returns this week

    BOWERBANK — Every five years the small town of Bowerbank celebrates community with Bowerbank Days, and the event returns in 2014 with a number of activities scheduled for this weekend —with many taking place at or around the fire station.
    On Thursday, Aug. 7 the fun starts with a foul shot tournament at 5 p.m. at the fire station. Adults receive cash prizes for first, second and third place in male and female categories and a brand new basketball and prizes will be given to one male and one female winner for youth under the age of 13.     CELEBRATE IN BOWERBANK — Bowerbank Days returns in 2014, with many events set for the evening of Friday, Aug. 8 and during the day on Saturday, Aug. 9 at or around the fire station. The celebration takes place every five years, and during the 2009 edition Dan Preble came in second in a sawing competition.

    Friday, Aug. 8 kicks off with a baked bean supper from 5-6:30 p.m. with ham, coleslaw, rolls and beverage. The highly anticipated silent auction begins at 5 p.m., and visitors can expect to find amazing prizes. The auction will end sometime between 2 and 2:20 p.m. on Saturday — by alarm.
    Friday’s activities also include the Bowerbank “Simply the Best” clothing sale and raffle tickets for giveaways will be available throughout the evening. For those who love to dance, the festival will also include square dancing with Walter Lougee from 7-9 p.m.
    On Saturday, Aug. 9 at 7:30 a.m. registration will open for the 5K Gary Wakeland Memorial Race, which will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. from the fire station. At 9 those who will participate in the Bowerbank Days Parade will begin to assemble, as the start time of the parade is 10 a.m. Following the parade, visitors can enjoy a free musical show starting with bagpipes and drums, followed by Dexter Brass and ending with the Stagecoach Band. At approximately 2:30 p.m. the winners of the raffle, silent auction and tournaments will be announced.
    One of the most unique features of Bowerbank Days is the mega Boat Parade, beginning at the boat launch at 5 p.m. All types of boats and floating devices will be exhibited in the parade, making the procession a “boat-load” of fun.
    All-day activities on Saturday include kids’ games and prizes, train rides, clowns, caricature drawings, face painting/tattoos, arts and crafts vendors, a clothing sale and used book sale and there will be give-away prizes throughout the day.
