CA Dean Memorial Hospital provides digital mammography

GREENVILLE — Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital has announced that it now provides the latest in mammography screening technology starting in mid-March. According to Glenn Beebe, imaging manager, “Generous donations from the surrounding community have allowed CA Dean to purchase the Hologic Selenia Digital Mammography System. We are very proud to add this new technology to the hospital’s scope of services for women.”

Digital mammography provides a detailed electronic image of the breast, with superior contrast resolution, and can detect early and highly curable cancers too small to be felt. With digital mammography, radiologists reading the studies can electronically manipulate the digital images, potentially saving patients from undergoing additional views and radiation.

Digital mammography is particularly beneficial in screening women who are under age 50, or women of any age who have very dense breast tissue. Additionally, studies show digital mammography uses less radiation than standard film mammography. As the images appear on the technologist’s monitor in a matter of seconds, there is no waiting for film to develop, which means less time in the breast imaging suite for patients.

Approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. About 85 percent of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. Fortunately, 96 percent of women who find and treat breast cancer early will be cancer-free after five years.
