Three Rivers Kiwanis makes a move
MILO — Three Rivers Kiwanis of Milo-Brownville has moved into a brand new building. Located at 24 Gerrish Road, north of downtown off Park Street, the building is a multi-use facility with lots of parking. The first weekly Kiwanis meeting at the new site was held on the morning of June 4, welcoming a large crowd with coffee and tea, donuts and breakfast sandwiches.
Weekly Kiwanis meetings usually conduct pertinent business, discuss upcoming events and have a speaker. The first speaker was PJ Laney, fraud and anti-money-laundering analyst with Bangor Savings Bank (BSB) in the risk management department. Laney described how BSB is dedicated to protecting customers’ financial security, especially senior citizens.
Long-time member Eben DeWitt conducted an induction ceremony to welcome new Kiwanian Isabelle (Izzy) Warren.
The new building was built by Tom and Nancy Harrigan of Milo and will be donated to a newly formed Kiwanis Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Construction began in September and continued through the winter, overcoming several challenging obstacles. A grand opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, July 30 with festivities and a luncheon for guests. Watch for more details as the day approaches. The public is welcome to share in the celebration.
Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, and became an international organization with the creation of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, the following year — in 2015 Kiwanis celebrates its 100th anniversary. In the early years, members focused on business networking, but in 1919 the organization changed its focus to service. In the 1960s, worldwide expansion was approved and within the decade Kiwanis International-Europe was formed, representing Kiwanians in 11 European nations.
Three Rivers Kiwanis (established in 1991) meets every Wednesday morning at the Kiwanis Building at 24 Gerrish Road at 6:30, except the last Wednesday (be it the fourth or fifth Wednesday of the month), which meets at 6:30 p.m. The public is always welcome.
