Mary B. Libby

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Mary B. Libby, 96, passed away April 7, 2014, at Hibbard’s Nursing Home in Dover-Foxcroft. Mary was born November 6, 1917, the daughter of Peter and Gladys (Sargent) Nicholas.
Mary was a hard-working and dedicated homemaker throughout her life, spending countless hours caring for her younger siblings, then her husband and two children, cooking meals, baking pies, ironing everything, and cleaning her house until spotless.
She especially loved curtains and tablecloths. As a young mother, Mary enjoyed watching her son play high school baseball at the fairgrounds and cheering for her daughter at high school basketball games. In later years, Mary spent many hours knitting slipper socks and mittens for her grandchildren.
She is also fondly remembered for her peanut butter fudge and mashed potatoes. Mary also kept up with Lewis throughout their many years together, working tirelessly at his side picking potatoes, mowing the lawn, raking leaves, and sweeping snow off her porch.
She was a passionate card and Yahtzee player, too, strong-willed and full-spirited right to the end. “I’m still kicking!” she’d always say.
Mary is survived by her son, Robert Libby and wife, Diane, of Sydney, Australia; and her daughter, Maryann Hartley and husband, George, of Dover-Foxcroft. She also leaves four grandchildren, Belinda Malloy and husband, James, of Australia, Troy Hartley and wife, Diane, of Williamsburg, VA, Dean Hartley and wife, Doreen, of Gardiner, and Julie Maxson of Mapleton; six great-grandchildren, Cameron, Riley, and Flynn of Australia, Emma and Griffin of Virginia, and Steven and wife, Xiaoxiao, of Lewiston; several nieces and nephews (a special mention to Louis Jr., Kim, and Nancy Nicholas of Dover-Foxcroft for their regular visits and companionship).
She was predeceased by her 12 siblings; and her husband, Lewis, of 68 years.
Out of respect for Mary’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A private graveside memorial will be held in the spring in the family lot at the Dover Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
